Theodore Hines (1859 -1898)
Theodore Hines was highly regarded a 19th century British artist specializing in rural landscapes. Theodore was a landscape painter, brother of the artist Frederick Hines and he exhibited 8 paintings at The Royal Academy in the 1880-90s, of which several are still on view. He also had 29 pieces exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists and his paintings remain popular today. He also had exhibitions from 1876 through 1889 at numerous other prestigious London galleries, including Suffolk Street and Grovenor Gallery. Even though he specialized in rural landscapes, London was Hines' primary residence throughout his artistic career. He signed his painting Theo Hines in a very florid style. Theodore Hines was born in 1859 in South London and both he and his brother Frederick, born 1853, became full time artists. In 1871, according to the Census, he and his brother were living with their parents in Southwark. By 1881 he was lodging in St. Pancras and was listed as an artist.
